The United Arab Emirates is reeling from its most severe rainfall event in 75 years, with certain areas experiencing over 250 mm (approximately 10 inches) of rain in less than 24 hours, as the state’s social media office reported on Wednesday. The intense rain has heightened the risk and frequency of flash floods. The storm’s impact on Dubai has been profound.
Torrential rainfall has paralyzed Dubai and caused extensive flooding across the UAE and Bahrain, resulting in numerous casualties. On Tuesday, the city was drenched with about 100 mm (nearly 4 inches) of rain in just 12 hours, a volume that matches its average annual rainfall, according to United Nations data. The situation got worse on Wednesday when two years’ worth of rain fell in just 24 hours, leading to continued floods.
The extraordinary weather is part of a more extensive storm system sweeping across the Arabian Peninsula and extending across the Gulf of Oman. This system also affects neighboring regions like Oman and southeastern Iran, bringing similarly unusual wet conditions. Significant flooding also affected major retail centers, including Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. Additionally, social media images showed that water had reached ankle-deep levels in at least one station of the Dubai Metro.
