Tropical Storm Lupit Makes Landfall in China, Prompting Mass Evacuation

According to the National Meteorological Centre (NMC), Tropical Storm Lupit made landfall in Shantou city, Guangdong province of China, early on August 5 at 11:20 am (local time), with maximum sustained winds up to 85 km/h. More than 33,000 residents have been evacuated to safe places. 

The Chinese Meteorological Agency (CMA) has issued blue and yellow typhoon warnings for coastal areas from Shantou to Xiamen. Heavy rain is expected to lash the southeastern part of Zhejiang, the eastern part of Fujian, most of Guangdong and the southeastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. 

Typhoon Lupit is forecasted to weaken as it tracks northeastwards reaching the northern Strait of Taiwan early on August 8.

Another Storm system in the same region has produced Tropical Storm Mirinae as of August 5. It is expected to move towards the northeast coast of Japan with maximum sustained winds of 46 km/h.
