Powerful M 7.0 Earthquake strikes Southwest Mexico
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 in Southwest Mexico late Tuesday, causing widespread shaking as far away as Mexico City. No serious damage has been reported yet from the epicenter.
The earthquake was about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) east-northeast of Los Organos de San Agustin, about 8 miles from the Pacific Coast beach resort city of Acapulco, Guerrero, with a depth of around 7.8 miles (10 kilometers), as per the USGS.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in Mexico because of its location at the edge of the North American tectonic plate. In September 2017, two strong earthquakes struck Mexico and in 19 September, 1985, a magnitude 8.0 quake caused significant damage in and around Mexico City.
