M 7.8 Earthquake Near Solomon Islands, Tsunami Watch

A  M 7.8 earthquake hit close to the Solomon Islands early Friday, putting the nations in the South Pacific, including Hawaii, on alert for tsunami waves.

“Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas, even far from the epicenter. An investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. For more information, please read the CNN story here.
