Midwest Derecho

 In Event News

A derecho storm left widespread damage and power outages across the midwest states of Nebraska and Iowa this afternoon, and is moving across Illinois. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a thunderstorm watch for the region:

A derecho producing significant damaging winds will persist across much of northern Illinois and possibly far southern Wisconsin, and into northern Indiana and southern Lower Michigan this evening.

SPC, Day One Convective Outlook, August 10, 2020

The SPC forecast the derecho to continue east across northern Illinois, at speeds around 60 mph. In Iowa, 60-80 mph winds have been reported.

A derecho is a widespread and straight-line wind storm associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms.
