Regional Trends in US COVID-19 Data (May 25)
During May, while some hard hit areas such as New York began to show improvements in the number of daily new cases, rural areas showed the opposite – an increase in the number of daily new cases. Shown on a per capita basis, an example of this trend can clearly be seen in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
At the end of April, Wilkes County had a low rate of 35 daily new cases; this climbed rapidly during to just under 400 new cases per day by May 18.
Daily New Cases Per Capita by US county – updated as of May 25, 2020. Counties in yellow have 1 – 10 confirmed coronavirus cases per million, while areas with no color have less than 1 case per million. For developing planning scenarios, these areas may be of interest, as they are under the IMHE‘s suggested threshold of 1 infection per million to begin easing social distancing restrictions, while avoiding a resurgence of infections via active case detection and contact tracing.
